Sheriff’s Office warns of home improvement scam Posted: By Joseph Pereira – email ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) – The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office is warning people of a new scam that is targeting the elderly. Public information officer Natalie Bailey said people posing as energy efficiency specialists are offering free in-home assessments. According to Bailey, once the offer is accepted, the homeowner is contacted to confirm the appointment, but if it is canceled for any reason, they are threatened with a bill. She said one person has already been arrested in connection with the scam. Richard Farrant, of Taylorsville, NC, was arrested on Thursday in connection with the scam in Morgantown, Bailey said. Morgantown Public Safety investigators discovered that Farrant had a felony warrant in Buncombe County for a similar complaint, according to Bailey.
